Michael Parsons has over 25 years’ experience as an executive and consultant in the banking industry, with a strong emphasis on technological innovation. An early evangelist for Bitcoin, he has become one of the UK’s leading authorities and thought leaders on blockchain distributed ledger technology for financial services and a sought-after speaker and advisor on the subject. He currently serves as the Chairman and Executive Director of the Cardano Foundation, which promotes and supports the new Cardano blockchain protocol. There his mandate is to promote the protocol and associated Cardano ecosystem as well as positively influence the emerging commercial and legislative landscape for blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies.

What is Cardano?
Cardano is a security focused blockchain that harnesses the latest research and engineering insights to build a platform suitable for the highest value applications. Built on a foundation of peer-reviewed research created through partnerships with the world’s foremost universities, Cardano aims to create a platform for decentralised applications and smart contracts that can be processed with a technique called formal verification. This allows logical proof of the correctness of code and smart contracts, for those applications where value is high and security is paramount. Cardano combines this with an innovative layered approach that separates accounting of value from all other smart contract and computation activity. This means functionality can be added to smart contract capabilities without changing the protocol responsible for the cryptocurrency.
How much team are working on Cardano?
3 companies : 1. Cardano Foundation: A Swiss non-profit and guardian of the Cardano ecosystem and community. It aims to proactively work with governments and regulatory bodies, as well as forming strategic partnerships with enterprises and other open-source projects to further global adoption of the technology. 2. IOHK: A world-class engineering and technology company committed to using peer-to-peer innovations to provide financial services to three billion people that don’t have them. The group is contracted to design, build, and maintain the Cardano platform until 2020. 3. Emurgo: a company formed to integrate, develop and support businesses who want to utilise Cardano's decentralised blockchain.
What is unique about the project?
Cardano is the first blockchain project to be built on peer reviewed academic research. This level of scrutiny of the underlying technology is an industry first. Further to this, Cardano is unique in that it’s written in the Haskell coding language. Haskell is considered to be one of the most secure programming languages, minimizing the number of errors and adding extremely robust security to the platform. This includes use of a technique called formal verification, which allows mathematical proof of the correctness of code. Cardano is also designed to operate in regulated industries whilst protecting individual privacy. Applications built on Cardano can be individually customised to meet regulator requirements, but individuals can protect their privacy by choosing whether they want to enter regulated domains.

The pre-launch token sale of Ada ran from September 2015 to January 2017 was undertaken over 4 different tranches. During the sale the average price paid for 1 Ada was $0.0024 USD and 94.8% of Ada voucher holders who participated in the sale are Japanese.
How will Cardano overcome the first-mover advantage of Ethereum?
So how many Java, C++ or Go developers are writing code on Ethereum? You can’t, Ethereum doesn’t support any of these languages. They can’t even run a single viral app on the platform. If you look at the top 10 languages, none of them works on the system, so, by definition, all those developers aren’t developing for the system, they have to go and learn new tools and new stuff. With Cardano, first off, we’re backward-compatible, 100%, we’re running an EVM. So you can take your Solidity code and your Web 3 stuff and all the things you’ve come to know and love about Ethereum, and you can run it on my system, and it’s faster, cheaper and safer to run it on my system because we have a better consensus model.
Are there any plans to implement private transactions in the style of Monero or Zcash?
Yes, so Monero uses a primitive called ring signatures, and Zcash uses a snark primitive. So privacy is a complicated topic because you’re actually talking about three things. You’re talking about the privacy in terms of linkability, so, if I look at a transaction or an address, what’s the probability that I can relate it to a known identity? So basically, go from anonymous or pseudonymous to known, the linkability dimension of it. Then there’s the obfuscation of amounts. So you might not be able to easily connect the addresses or transactions to people, but if it’s a public ledger, you could certainly see what’s the most expensive transaction, and it creates kind of a priority cue for deanonymization. Say, ‘Ah, well, there’s a $10 million transaction that happened today, let’s go and find who has that with a wrench to rob him’.
What are the design principles, engineering best practices and avenues for exploration Cardano follows?
Separation of accounting and computation into different layers. Implementation of core components in highly modular functional code. Small groups of academics and developers competing with peer reviewed research. Heavy use of interdisciplinary teams including early use of InfoSec experts. Fast iteration between white papers, implementation and new research required to correct issues discovered during review
What stack is powering Cardano?
The protocols making Cardano possible are being implemented in Haskell. The user interface has been encapsulated in a fork of Electron that we are calling Daedalus. We have chosen to use the web architectural model where possible, and for our database, we opted for a key-value paradigm using RocksDB.
What is called Cardano Proof of Stake?
Our proof of stake protocol is called Ouroboros and it has been designed by an extremely talented team of cryptographers from five academic institutions led by Professor Aggelos Kiayias of the University of Edinburgh. The core innovation it brings beyond being proven secure using a rigorous cryptographic model is a modular and flexible design that allows for the composition of many protocols to enhance functionality.
Why is Ouroboros modulable?
This modularity allows for features such as delegation, sidechains, subscribable checkpoints, better data structures for light clients, different forms of random number generation and even different synchronization assumptions. As a network develops from having thousands to millions and even billions of users, the requirements of its consensus algorithm will also change. Thus, it is vital to have enough flexibility to accommodate these changes and thereby future-proof the heart of a cryptocurrency.
